Slidebox for Mac: the same idea, for folders on your Mac

Slidebox runs on Apple-silicon Macs as its iPad app, and like on the phone it sorts the Apple Photos library into albums. If your photos are files in folders or on a drive, you want something that moves files: cullzy works the same one-photo-at-a-time way, with a number key for each folder.

What Slidebox gets right

One photo at a time, and one gesture to decide it: swipe up to delete, tap an album to file it. It's the “Tinder for photos” idea done properly, and its thousands of ratings say the loop works. Decide one photo, and the next is already there. Cullzy is built on the same loop.

Where it stops, on a Mac

  • It sorts the Photos library, not your files. The result is albums inside Apple Photos. Photos on an external drive, or in a folder that was never imported, are out of reach.
  • Albums don't move anything. Nothing on disk changes, so you can't hand someone a folder at the end. (Why that matters: Apple Photos or plain folders?)
  • It's a touch app on a desk. On a Mac it runs as the iPad app, so the controls were designed for a finger, not a keyboard.

When Slidebox is the better pick

When your photos live in iCloud Photos and you'd rather sort on your phone, five minutes at a time, and you want the result as albums you'll see on every device.

When cullzy is

When the backlog is files: photos copied off an old laptop, a drive of phone backups, a camera card, a family member's photos copied over on a USB stick. Cullzy files each photo into a real folder on disk, with a key instead of a swipe, and a keyboard has more room than a swipe: four directions become nine numbers. Undo survives quitting, a RAW and its JPEG move together, and screenshots, forwards and duplicates are found for you first.
